Samlede Skrifter, Trettende Bind (1903)

The thirteenth volume of Georg Brandes’s Samlede Skrifter (Kjøbenhavn: Gyldendalske Boghandels Forlag, 1903), a Supplementbind, reprints his writings from the controversy over faith and knowledge in the later 1860s. The title page is dated 1903 and the Indledning is signed “April 1903.”

The text

Three transcriptions, each with its own PDF and an English translation beside it:

Not transcribed: pp. 43–84 (see below), pp. 110–114 (Paludan-Müller), and everything from p. 124 on.

pp. 43–84: Dualismen i vor nyeste Filosofi

The volume reprints Brandes’s first book, Dualismen i vor nyeste Philosophie (1866). The 1866 first edition is already in this collection, fully transcribed and collated against two scans. The 1903 text is Brandes’s own revision: it is in the orthography of 1903, and its chapter titles differ (the 1903 Indhold reads Indledning 43, Den absolute Uensartethed 54, Det Antirationelle 67, Dualismens Følger 71). So it is a variant witness to the 1866 text. It calls for a collation of its own against the 1866 edition, not a second transcription. That collation has not been done.

Editorial note

The full diplomatic record is the comment header of each transcription.tex. In brief:

  1. Source. The Google Books scan of the University of Chicago copy (600 dpi bitonal). Printed page = PDF page − 12, verified at the image.
  2. Orthography. The 1903 orthography is transcribed as printed. Nothing is harmonised with the first printings or with the 1866 Dualismen.
  3. Emphasis. Italic is the volume’s only emphasis device, and every italic span is set in italic. The volume quotes with single guillemets pointing outward, ‹…›. Printer’s errors are transcribed as printed and commented at the site.
  4. Two titles for each piece. The contents leaf gives short titles (“Samvittighed og Videnskab”). The heads over the pieces name the book under review and the year of first publication (“A. C. Larsen: Samvittighed og Videnskab (1866)”). Both readings are kept: the contents-leaf title drives the table of contents, and the head is transcribed as printed.
  5. Accuracy. Every batch was compared word by word against two independent machine readings before it was spliced: the scan’s own text layer, and Project Runeberg’s OCR of the same edition. A seeded random sample of 20 of the 73 text pages was then read at the image by readers who had not transcribed them. They found one error in the sample, on p. 27, which has been corrected.
